Assisting passengers coping with the loss of a loved one through their difficult time

On September 24, a routine flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Seoul, VJ860,turned tragic, testing the compassion and professionalism of our team. While the flight was in progress, a 47-year-old female passenger suddenly fainted, causing panic in the cabin. The crew quickly responded, issuing an emergency call, and the flight was diverted to Hong Kong International Airport at around 4 PM. Paramedics were waiting to provide immediate assistance.

Sadly, despite their swift efforts, the passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival at North Lantau Hospital. Her cause of death remains under investigation, leaving her family in shock and mourning.

Upon landing, CSDM Bonnie Fu, SCSO Raymond Chow, and SCSO Samuel Ip swiftly took charge of the situation. As the plane landed, the team ensured the passenger received the necessary medical care. SCSO Samuel Ip accompanied the passenger to the hospital, but the tragic news of her passing was confirmed before they arrived. In that moment, Samuel became a compassionate support to the grieving family.

The passenger's husband, also on the flight, was devastated by the loss.Samuel, together with Director of Passenger Services Bryan Foo, assisted him in lodging a police report, facilitating communication with authorities, and arranging for a Vietnamese translator. Understanding the emotional toll on the husband, the team went beyond expectations, with approval from VietJet Air's Station Manager Chris Yeung, to arrange one night of  free accommodation for him. The following day, they also coordinated his return flight to Saigon, providing much-needed support.

The events surrounding flight VJ860 highlight the fragility of life and the importance of compassion in service. Our team demonstrated professionalism and deep empathy, turning a tragic incident into an example of human kindness, ensuring the family was not left alone in their time of need.

This extraordinary response underscores the significance of prioritizing human experience in our service, showcasing the highest standards of professionalism and compassion. In times of adversity,we can be a source of strength for others.
